Are you looking for skilled wallpaper installation and removal in Knoxville?

We’ve got you covered. Or, uncovered…

Wallpaper is enjoying a whole new level of attention these days. But, we should be clear: we’re not talking about your grandparents’ wallpaper (no disrespect to faded floral prints intended).

At McLain’s Painting Service, we’re seeing a demand for vibrant patterns and design, typically used in a more localized way. High-impact spaces, accent walls, and even ceilings.

As we’ll explore in more detail below, the key is to take the process seriously. Consider your options, consider the product, and carefully consider who you trust with the job.

What should you consider before hanging wallpaper?

  1. The placement. Wallpaper isn’t cheap, and unlike paint it’s not easy to quickly undo a look you don’t like. We recommend carefully researching and planning, focusing on a higher-impact area rather than a widespread project. For example, dining rooms can be a fantastic place for stylish, classy wallpaper, but most homeowners aren’t papering through an entire floor of their home anymore.
  2. The quality. You can certainly find cheaper wallpaper options, but keep in mind that you get what you pay for. Consistency, quality, and how easily/well it can be hung are all important to weigh as you assign a value to your project.
  3. The future. It might seem funny to think about, but trust us: it’s worth planning ahead. If wallpaper is hung the right way now, it can be much easier to remove/replace down the road without avoidable damage to the wall.
  4. The environment. And by “environment,” we specifically mean the conditions of the room in which it’s going to be hung. Is there a high moisture content in the air, like a bathroom? Or will your walls be exposed to a lot of wear and tear? If so, you’ll need to carefully consider the type of paper you hang, or whether it’s the right choice for that space at all.
  5. The installer. It’s worth finding a wallpaper hanging professional with proven experience. A general painter or handyman might feel ambitious and take on the job, but if they don’t know exactly what they’re doing, and have the technical knowledge required, it can lead to future problems.
  6. The preparation. A lot of careful planning and prep goes into a job done right. For example, many homeowners don’t realize that “sizing” needs to be applied first: a specific primer that goes on your wall before the adhesive and paper. It can be tinted to match your paper too, as a professional tip, minimizing any visibility at seams and joints. It’s also absolutely essential to find and mark your centerpoints, mapping out where and how the paper will lie. This ensures that the patterns line up correctly and your installation looks professional.

Wallpaper hanging FAQs

Q. Can I hang wallpaper myself?

You can, but you have to be aware of what you’re getting into. Wallpaper hanging is both an art and a science, and requires specialized tools and experience. Especially if you’re investing in nice quality paper, it makes a lot of sense to put your project in professional hands.

Q. How do you remove wallpaper?

There are a couple of approaches you can take. One is to steam the paper, using direct heat and moisture to reactivate and loosen the adhesive. It definitely works, but you have to move slowly and methodically.

The other approach is to use spray-on chemicals. This is a much more efficient method, soaking the paper, removing the adhesive, and allowing for a faster takedown.

Q. Can I remove wallpaper myself or do I have to hire someone?

You definitely can remove it yourself, but do your homework first and take your time. It might be tempting to rush the process or get a little rough with your walls, but that results in surface damage that takes time to repair. In some cases, a wall might even need to be fully skimcoated to fill and repair blemishes. Pro tip? Remember that there’s a “front page” and “back page” to your wallpaper, and the front page needs to be removed first before the back.

Q. Can you hang wallpaper on ceilings?

Yes, you can! But, as we mentioned above, it requires carefully mapping your centerpoints and layout.

Q. Can you hang wallpaper in a bathroom?

A half-bath or powder room, yes. But if it’s a full bathroom with exposure to a steamy shower, we’d avoid it.

Q. Does wallpaper quality matter?

It does matter, yes. We recommend buying locally so that you can see and feel the paper in person. Online shopping is convenient, but it only offers so much.
